Wildflower Basket 2007 BOM, September Blocks, Spotted Coral Root and Columbine

home

The Spotted Coral Root has no chlorophyll; it grows as a saprophyte that grows cooperatively with a certain fungus to break down organic matter for nutrients.  It has no real leaves, and its stem grows below ground.  The Columbine is cultivated from seed with ease, flowers in spring, possibly in its first year, is sought after by bees, and has spur-shaped petals.
