The Swamp Laurel's leaves have a very toxic narcotic agent that was sometimes used by Native Americans to commit suicide, though the right dose (applied by an expert) can benefit a variety of ailments.  It grows in the northern North America in the form of an evergreen shrub, and is very cold resistant.  The flowers have both male and female parts, and are pollinated by bees.
