Wildflower Basket 2007 BOM, August Blocks, American Lotus and Wood Sorrel

home

Native Americans used the American Lotus as a source of food.  It is commonly planted in private ponds as a food source for fish, and for its decorative flowers.  It has etablished itself as a weed in some locations.  The Wood Sorrel genus occurs throughout the world with the exception of the polar regions, and is notable for the dramatic response its leaves can have to temporary changes in light intensity.  This species is especially diverse in Mexico, Brazil, and South Africa.
