The Mariner's Compass Block

This block represents navigation on the Great Lakes.  Wisconsin has a strong nautical heritage due to having many miles of coast along the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.

Hints when Paper Piecing:

Set the stitch length on your sewing machine to small and use a bigger needle size.  That way the paper will be easier to remove when you are finished.

The lowest number should show the right side of the fabric.  The sewing order is 1, 2, 3, ...

For this block, you should do the paper piecing for B & D first, then paper piece B & C by matching points 3 & 4 from B to point 3 & 4 on C.  Pin the matching points in place.  Next, attach A to ((B+C)+D) by matching the point at 5; then attach E by matching the point at 6. Keep in mind that all the lines have to line up.  Pin the lines together for accuracy.

Before sewing the spikes together, remove part of the paper for the tip of the spikes because it is harder to remove after sewing.
